Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard hydro period for
a fire bottle?
It depends on the specific part number and the OEM. For some units it is five years and other units it is ten years. It is important to clarify some terminology – frequently we hear “my bottle is due for hydro”. This means that the fire bottle must be hydro retested, which always includes an overhaul of the unit. Unlike an oxygen bottle, the fire bottle cannot only be hydrotested. This is part of the reason the price of a hydro for a fire bottle is more expensive than a hydro for an oxygen bottle.
Does CAG include cartridges (“squibs”) in the standard overhaul?
No they do not. CAG overhauls fire bottles per the latest CMM revisions. The cartridges are not part of the standard overhaul kit. Our policy is to include cartridges as extra costs to the customer if the time has expired (typically 12 years) or if the customer specifically requests cartridges on the repair or purchase order. The customer must explicitly request cartridges in order for CAG to provide them.
What types of fire bottles are there?
Aside from the different OEMs, there are basically two types of fire bottles – o-ring and hermetic. The o-ring bottles, all the pressure is retained through the use of o-rings while the hermetic bottles seals the pressure through a welding process. The welding process is significantly more labor intensive than the o-ring process.
What is a blowdown bottle and what is the purpose of an x-ray?
A blowdown bottle is a highly pressurized cylinder containing nitrogen which is used to force open doors or to bring down landing gear. The x-ray is necessary to check for cracks and/or corrosion inside the cylinder. It is typically due in the 9th and 12th year from the DOM of the unit.
Does CAG offer exchanges?
Yes we do. We have over $3.0 million of rotable material in stock covering a wide application of aircraft. CAG ships the exchange unit in OHC condition, and you have 15 days to ship us the core. We almost always will ship the OHC exchange unit with a fresh dual release tag from CAG Industries.
What should I do if I don’t ship hazmat?
If you’re business is located within 200 miles of NYC then CAG will pickup and deliver it…for free! Just contact us and we will schedule it. If your business is located further than 200 miles from CAG, you can ask if someone else on or near the airport has hazmat shipping capability and they can do it. Or you can look for a local shipping agent that can provide the service. These options are usually $75 - $100 additional cost to the shipping expense, but if you do not ship hazmat frequently, they are the most practical solutions.
I don’t see the OEM of a unit I need serviced, can CAG help me?
Yes we can. We offer the same pickup and delivery service for any unit we do not show capabilities on. CAG will manage the entire repair process saving you the time and expense of dealing with hazmat material.
